This is a picture Cervical dysplasia severe colposcopy is the most common procedure after a patient receives an abnormal pap smear.  A colposcopy is a simple in office procedure that helps the Doctor to evaluate and diagnose cervical changes.  The patient is placed in the same position as she would be having a pap smear, a speculum is placed and vinegar is put on the cervix. The vinegar allows abnormal areas to stand out. Depending on the degree of dysplasia or abnormality the Doctor will then decide if a biopsy is necessary.  If a biopsy is necessary the patient may experience mild discomfort during the biopsy and should resolve shortly after the procedure is finished.  After a biopsy is taken the patient may experience spotting or a slight discharge for 1-2 days.  The biopsy will be sent to a lab where further evaluation of the tissue will be performed.  Once the results come back the Doctor will discuss them with the patient and decide whether further treatment is necessary.
