Probably you’ve noticed our new widget at the inner sidebar. Yeah, the one with those cute litte pictures. They are links to cool fresh and interesting posts via 2leep.com . 2leep is a new blogging tool, which connects many cool blogs and organizes their content into a big postroll. Well, we are always happy to spread the world about kool stuffs, so let’s roll and rock and kick it.

Lung Exercise and Education Programme (LEEP)

The Lung Exercise and Education Programme (LEEP) is run at Frenchay Hospital and accepts patients from across the North Bristol NHS Trust area.  It started in 1994 to provide pulmonary rehabilitation for patients and has since grown and evolved.  We mainly see patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), although we also accept referrals for a multitude of other respiratory disorders.
LEEP is an eight week course of twice weekly supervised exercise and multi-disciplinary education sessions.  Each patient is fully assessed before starting the programme and various measurements are taken at the start and finish of the programme in order to calculate improvements during the eight weeks.  We receive referrals from hospital physicians, GPs, practice nurses, ward staff and physiotherapists.  Patients are assessed for suitability prior to starting the programme and alternative solutions are provided if LEEP is not suitable, for example, a home based exercise programme may be prescribed.

LEEP does not have access to hospital transport and all our patients attend via their own means.
We also run an on-going weekly exercise programme for patients who have completed LEEP in order that they can continue to exercise in a supervised environment.  Many of our patients report that they also get great benefit from the social support network that coming to LEEP provides.
The service is run and co-ordinated by a senior physiotherapist.  Other members of the team include another physiotherapist, two respiratory nurses and consultant physician who all provide input as and when required.  We also have regular input from a psychologist, occupational therapist and dietician.
