The Lung Exercise and Education Programme (LEEP) is
run at Frenchay Hospital and accepts patients from across the North Bristol NHS Trust area. It started in 1994 to provide pulmonary rehabilitation for patients
and has since grown and evolved. We mainly see patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), although we also accept referrals for a multitude of other respiratory disorders.
LEEP is an eight week course of twice weekly supervised exercise and multi-disciplinary education sessions. Each patient is fully assessed before starting the programme and various measurements
are taken at the start and finish of the programme in order to calculate improvements during the eight weeks. We receive referrals from hospital physicians, GPs, practice nurses, ward staff and
physiotherapists. Patients are assessed for suitability prior to starting the programme and alternative solutions are provided if LEEP is not suitable, for example, a home based exercise
programme may be prescribed.
